Circa 1820s: The States pattern, also called America and Independence, is perhaps the most popular series of dark blue historical Staffordshire created for the American market by English brothers James and Ralph Clews. The names of fifteen American states are separated by patriotic stars and are festooned around a piece's border. The firm produced over a dozen romantic views for the central medallion with included the figures George Washington, Justice, and Liberty and an assortment of fruits and flowers. All of the scenes portray the romantic vision of the lushness and wealth of the American countryside. This 3.5" cup plate features the Three Story Mansion, Extension to the Left central medallion. Its condition is good with minor edge wear to the side of the plate and no cracks or repairs.
